Addis Ababa, June 5, 2025 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has conveyed his best wishes to Muslims in Ethiopia and around the world on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, which will be observed globally tomorrow.
In his message, the Prime Minister emphasized that the holiday commemorates sacrifice and submission to a higher cause—values he described as essential to Ethiopia’s continued progress. He reflected on the story of Prophet Ibrahim, who was willing to sacrifice his son Ismail in obedience to the Creator, noting that such devotion highlights the depth of personal commitment required for meaningful outcomes.
He drew a parallel between this religious act and the foundation of nation-building, stressing that countries are built through the sacrifices of each generation for the good of the next. Ethiopia’s past, he said, is defined by the selfless acts of its forebears, who secured national freedom and sovereignty without expectation of material reward. While their sacrifices brought them historical and moral honor, it is the present generation that benefits—and must, in turn, take responsibility for the future.
The Prime Minister also underlined the importance of reconciliation, drawing on the tradition that Adam and Hawa (Eve) were reunited on this day after a long separation. Eid al-Adha, he said, reminds us of the need to reconnect and overcome division.
Although differences in opinion, grievances, or historical experiences may have caused separation among Ethiopians, he noted that the greater danger lies in allowing those divisions to persist. As citizens of one nation, he urged all to seek common ground and rebuild trust.
To that end, Abiy highlighted national dialogue as a vital tool for unity—a platform where people can express their views, listen to one another, and work through differences peacefully. He encouraged Ethiopians to embrace this spirit of dialogue as a way to deepen mutual understanding and collective strength.
Concluding his message, the Prime Minister called on all Ethiopians to reflect on the sacrifices needed to build a better future and to renew their commitment to national unity and dialogue as the country marks this important holiday.
