Addis Ababa, September 30, 2026 (FMC) — The Addis Ababa City Council has unanimously re-elected Mayor Adanech Abiebie for another term, as she set out an agenda centered on improving residents’ livelihoods, modernizing city services, expanding economic opportunities and advancing digital transformation.
The re-election took place during the Council’s fourth-round inaugural session at the Adwa Victory Memorial, attended by newly elected Council members representing Addis Ababa.
Following her re-election, Adanech took the oath of office, pledging to discharge her responsibilities with integrity and diligence.
In her address to the Council, the Mayor thanked the people of Addis Ababa and the Council for giving her another opportunity to lead the capital, saying the city administration would focus on improving residents’ quality of life during its next chapter.
She said the seventh general elections demonstrated broad public participation and reflected residents’ aspirations for democratic development, lasting peace and progress.
The Mayor also stressed the importance of political diversity within the new Council, saying differences in political outlook should not be viewed as hostility. She noted the inclusion of new Council members and representatives of competing political parties, emphasizing the need to work together in serving the city.
“We will serve all residents of the city equally,” Adanech said.
She identified easing the cost of living and reducing inflationary pressures among the administration’s key priorities for the new term, with the ultimate objective of improving the everyday lives of Addis Ababa residents.
Building public institutions that serve citizens with dignity will also be a major focus, she said, alongside establishing faster and more modern working systems and strengthening institutional and societal practices that reject corruption.
Adanech further pledged to accelerate Addis Ababa’s role in the implementation of the Digital Ethiopia 2030 vision, with the capital aspiring to become a major center of digital transformation and expanded digital public services.
Creating employment opportunities for young people, expanding investment and strengthening micro and small enterprises will also receive increased attention, she said.
The Mayor pledged continued action against illicit market practices and measures to improve market stability and protect consumers.
Council members, meanwhile, cited major infrastructure and urban development initiatives, efforts to reform the city administration’s working culture and the expansion of citizen-centered services among the key areas of performance during Adanech’s previous term.
Adanech has extensive administrative experience at regional and federal levels, having begun her public-service career as an educator in Oromia region before assuming leadership responsibilities in federal institutions.
The Council’s fourth-round session is also addressing the formation of the city administration, including the appointment of the deputy mayor, Council Speaker and Deputy Speaker, as well as other appointments and decisions.
Calling for continued cooperation from Addis Ababa residents, Adanech said collective effort would enable the city to achieve more than planned in its next phase.
“If we work together, we can achieve more than we planned, as we did before,” she said.
