Religious institutions and civic associations central to Ethiopia’s national consultation efforts, says NDC

Addis Ababa, May 22, 2026 (FMC) – The Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission (NDC) has emphasized the central role of religious institutions and civic associations in the ongoing national consultation process ahead of the forthcoming National Consultation Conference.

The Commission is holding a resource-gathering discussion with representatives of the two groups to exchange views on the consultation agenda and the broader national dialogue process.

Opening the session, Chief Commissioner Professor Mesfin Araya outlined the Commission’s activities, progress achieved, challenges encountered, and the role expected from participating institutions.

He noted that participation beginning at the woreda level reflects the inclusiveness of the process, adding that initial consultation phases have been conducted to address long-standing societal differences.

Professor Mesfin also said the process has recorded 93 percent participation across the country’s woredas, driven by strong public ownership.

Speaking on behalf of civic society organizations, President of the Council of Civic Associations, Ato Ahmed Hussein, said the process is vital for building national consensus and unity, stressing that sustainable peace requires inclusive and continuous dialogue.

He reaffirmed the commitment of civic associations to support the consultation process.

Participants are expected to review agenda proposals prepared by the Commission and provide inputs for the forthcoming National Consultation Conference.
