Religious Leaders Call on Ethiopians to Mark Easter with Unity, Compassion and Forgiveness

Addis Ababa, April 11, 2026 (FMC) — Religious leaders in Ethiopia have extended Easter greetings to Christian faithful and called for the holiday to be observed through strengthened unity, generosity, and compassion as Ethiopians prepare to celebrate Ethiopian Easter.

They noted that the occasion should serve as a moment to reinforce shared values of togetherness, good conduct, and care for others, particularly in line with the spiritual meaning of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, His Holiness Abune Matias I, underscored the need to celebrate the Easter holiday by practicing the good deeds taught in the religion.

Emphasizing the importance of implementing the values of the holiday, including good character and integrity, which are the core values of the celebration, His Holiness noted the importance of overcoming challenges encountered both globally and nationally.

Ethiopian Catholic Church Archbishop Cardinal Berhaneyesus D. Souraphiel, on his part, urged the faithful to demonstrate in practice what they have learned from their faith in God.

He stated that Christians should work for national peace and love by cooperating with their brothers and sisters, while avoiding grudges and hatred. According to him, supporting the needy in different parts of the country should be the main manifestation of the holy day.

The President of Ethiopian Evangelical Churches Council Reverend Dereje Jemberu said the Resurrection is a holy occasion in which the Creator expressed His profound love for mankind.

Noting that the Resurrection was the moment when hatred was replaced by love, separation by unity, and defeat by victory, he urged the strengthening of forgiveness among the faithful.

Concluding his message, the President expressed his best wishes to all followers of the Christian faithful to be filled with peace, love, and happiness.

Ethiopian Christians across the country are set to observe Ethiopian Easter tomorrow, April 12, through church services, prayers, and religious gatherings commemorating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, a central event in the Christian faith symbolizing hope, renewal, and spiritual victory.
