Addis Ababa, November 9, 2025 (FMC) – Eminent Ethiopian historian Professor Lapiso Gedelebo has passed away at the age of 87 after a prolonged illness, his family confirmed to Fana Digital on Sunday.
Professor Lapiso, one of Ethiopia’s most distinguished historians, dedicated his lifetime to researching, documenting, and teaching the nation’s vast historical and cultural heritage.
His scholarly works, including contributions to several landmark history books, have shaped the understanding of Ethiopia’s past for generations of students, researchers, and readers across Africa.
Widely recognized for his efforts to highlight Ethiopia’s shared values, cultural diversity, and linguistic unity, Professor Lapiso played a significant role in enriching the study of the country’s social and historical foundations.
His academic legacy continues to influence contemporary Ethiopian historiography and cultural studies.
According to his family, the funeral and farewell ceremony for Professor Lapiso Gedelebo will be held on November 11, 2025.
