Russian FM Says Adwa Victory Symbol of Sovereignty and Foundation for Modern Cooperation

Addis Ababa, March 2, 2026 (FMC) — Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov congratulated Ethiopia on the 130th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa, describing it as a historic symbol of sovereignty and a milestone that continues to shape modern cooperation and international relations.

In a message addressed to Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos and obtained by Fana Media Corporation, Mr. Lavrov described the Battle of Adwa as a historic milestone that resonated globally, marking the first victory of an African state over a colonial power.

He noted that the triumph not only demonstrated the resilience and strength of the Ethiopian people but also inspired independence movements across Africa.

Lavrov further underscored the long-standing traditions of friendship, respect and trust between Russia and Ethiopia, stating that the two countries continue to cooperate closely within multilateral platforms such as the United Nations and BRICS.

According to the message, Moscow and Addis Ababa are working together toward what he described as a just world order grounded in multipolarity and the supremacy of international law.

The Russian foreign minister highlighted ongoing bilateral cooperation in trade, economic, scientific, cultural and humanitarian spheres. He cited major joint initiatives, including plans for the construction of a Russian-designed nuclear power plant in Ethiopia, the reconstruction of the Russian Red Cross Hospital named after Dejazmach Balcha in Addis Ababa, and the establishment of a Russian–Ethiopian Joint Biological Research Center.

On the occasion of the anniversary, Lavrov conveyed wishes of peace, well-being and prosperity to the people of Ethiopia.

The Victory of Adwa remains a defining chapter in Ethiopia’s history, when Ethiopian forces decisively defeated invading Italian colonial troops and safeguarded the nation’s sovereignty at a time when much of Africa had fallen under colonial rule.

The triumph stands as a symbol of African resistance, unity and self-determination, and continues to inspire generations across the continent and beyond.

Ethiopians are celebrating the 130th anniversary of the historic victory today, March 2, with commemorative events held in Addis Ababa and across regional states.

This year’s commemoration is being observed under the theme “Glorious Past: Radiant Future,” underscoring the enduring legacy of Adwa in strengthening national unity, preserving sovereignty and advancing Ethiopia’s development aspirations in the contemporary era.
