School-Feeding Coverage Set for 70% Expansion as Ethiopia Puts Citizen-Centered Development at Heart of 2026/27 Priorities

Addis Ababa, October 6, 2026 (FMC) — School-feeding coverage is set to expand to 70% under the federal government’s priorities for the 2026/27 fiscal year, as Ethiopia advances a more citizen-centered approach to development.

The target was among the social-development objectives President Taye Atske-Selassie presented during Tuesday’s inaugural joint session of the House of Peoples’ Representatives and the House of Federation, where he outlined the government’s priorities and directions for the fiscal year and the period ahead.

The school-feeding programme forms part of a broader shift in the government’s approach to education, health and social protection. President Taye said the focus should move beyond expansion and coverage toward quality, while accelerating citizen-centered development.

Within that direction, expanding school-feeding coverage to 70% represents one of the government’s concrete service-delivery targets for the fiscal year.

The target was presented alongside other objectives, including increasing health-insurance coverage to 85%, expanding electricity access to 65% and extending water access.

The priorities come as the seventh parliamentary term enters its new working phase, following the opening proceedings of the two Houses on Monday and their inaugural joint session on Tuesday.

President Taye emphasized that implementation of the government’s programme should put the public interest, future-oriented vision and efficient use of time and resources at the centre of government work.
