Six flagship initiatives drive tangible gains under Ethiopia’s homegrown economic reform agenda – PM Office

Addis Ababa, April 21, 2026 (FMC) – Extracts from the 100-day reporting and nine-month performance review by the Council of Ministers indicate that six flagship initiatives under Ethiopia’s Homegrown Economic Reform Agenda are delivering visible progress across the nation.

Under the Green Legacy initiative, forest coverage has reached 23.6 percent. Farmers’ incomes are rising, green jobs are being created, soil and water resources are being conserved, and ecosystems are reported to be healthier than ever.

The National Wheat Development program is contributing to Ethiopia’s progress toward food security and sovereignty. New farming knowledge is expanding, raw materials are increasingly supplying local industries, costly imports are being replaced, jobs are growing, and farmers’ incomes are improving.

Through the Bounty of the Basket initiative, agricultural inputs are increasing and productivity is rising. Nutritious food is becoming more accessible and affordable, small-scale trade is expanding, and environmental protection is improving.

Implementation of the Digital Ethiopia strategy is advancing the digitization of legal, financial, and identification systems. Internet access and online services are expanding, mobile payment systems are growing rapidly, and e-commerce is helping citizens save time and costs.

Meanwhile, the Urban and Rural Corridors initiative is upgrading urban infrastructure with green transport systems. Quality of life is improving, local trade is gaining momentum, and stronger linkages are being established between urban and rural areas.

The Made in Ethiopia initiative is enhancing manufacturing capacity and increasing value addition. Imports are being substituted, foreign exchange earnings are rising, input supply chains are strengthening, and new employment opportunities are being created.

The review highlights how each pillar is contributing to transforming challenges into opportunities while supporting efforts to build a stronger and more self-reliant Ethiopia.
