State Minister details Ethiopia’s capacity and infrastructure for hosting COP32

Addis Ababa, November 12, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s broad endorsement by African nations and other countries at the ongoing COP30 summit in Belém, Brazil, has paved the way for its formal confirmation as host of the 2027 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP32), State Minister of Government Communication Services, Kebede Desisa, told Fana Digital.

Ethiopia is on track to be formally confirmed as the host of COP32 in 2027 following a successful bid over Nigeria, having received unanimous support from African countries and broad backing from the international community at COP30.

According to Kebede, the support from participating nations reflects Ethiopia’s proven ability to host large-scale international conferences, its growing green economy, and strengthened diplomatic influence.

He noted that Ethiopia has significantly expanded its capacity to organize continental and international forums.

Last year alone, the country successfully hosted over 150 high-level conferences, including the 2nd Africa Climate Summit (ACS2) and the Africa–CARICOM Leaders’ Summit, demonstrating its capability to manage complex events efficiently and safely, the state minister reminded.

Mr. Kebede explained that Ethiopia was chosen to host COP32, which is expected to draw more than 50,000 participants, not only because of its infrastructure but also due to its strengthened diplomatic presence, proven experience in hosting international conferences, and the safety of delegates.

He highlighted that the country’s focus on the green economy, achievements in the Green Legacy initiative, and strides in renewable energy development further reinforced its suitability as the venue for the global summit.

The State Minister also emphasized Ethiopia’s efforts to develop the tourism sector, noting that hosting international meetings and conferences is a major avenue for attracting global visitors.

He said that the country has elevated its conference tourism potential through extensive infrastructure investments, including centers capable of accommodating thousands of participants.

Notable examples include the Addis International Convention Center and the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum, which are expected to play key roles during COP32.

In addition to conference facilities, Kebede highlighted ongoing urban corridor development and tourist destination projects designed to offer delegates cultural and historical experiences alongside the summit.

These initiatives, he said, have significantly enhanced Addis Ababa’s appeal as a global meeting destination.

Kebede concluded that Ethiopia’s selection to host COP32 reflects the country’s high level of preparedness and experience in managing major international events.

He assured that the government is committed to leveraging its accumulated expertise to ensure a successful and impactful conference.
