Strong Earthquake Hits Western Japan, No Tsunami Warning Issued

Addis Ababa, January 6, 2026 (FMC) – A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 magnitude struck western Japan on Tuesday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The quake hit the eastern part of Shimane Prefecture at around 10:18 a.m. local time, at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometres. Authorities said no tsunami warning was issued following the tremor.

Local officials reported that no casualties or major damage have been confirmed so far, while safety assessments continue in the affected areas.

The earthquake caused temporary disruptions to transportation services, with operators suspending bullet train operations on the Sanyo Shinkansen Line between Okayama and Hiroshima due to power outages.
