Addis Ababa, August 1, 2025 (FMC) — Teenagers across Ethiopia have described their participation in the nationwide tree-planting campaign as a hands-on environmental education experience, allowing them to turn classroom lessons into meaningful action.
Citizens from all walks of life, including youth, took part in the historic initiative, which aimed to plant 700 million seedlings in a single day. The campaign, held under the theme “Renewal through Planting,” is a flagship effort within Ethiopia’s broader plan to plant 7.5 billion trees during the current rainy season.
In the Central Ethiopia Region, students gathered on Ganta Mountain in Arba Minch to contribute to the effort and reflect on the environmental importance of tree planting.
Inspired by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who appeared on national television planting trees with his son, the students shared their motivations and what they’ve learned.
Zetseat Tariku, a sixth-grade student at Arba Minch Siqela Mulu Primary School, emphasized the vital role trees play in improving air quality.
“Trees give us the fresh air we breathe,” she said, recalling her lessons in school about how trees produce oxygen essential for life. She participated eagerly alongside her entire family in the one-day campaign.
Absalom Mulatu, a second-grade student, said he learned from his parents that planting trees helps protect Arba Minch from flooding and erosion.
“With schools closed for the summer, I was happy to join other teenagers from my village to plant trees,” he shared.
Habtamu Matso, a fourth-grade student at Bola Gurba Primary School, highlighted the long-term benefits of the campaign, ENA reported.
“Trees provide shade for students to rest after class,” he noted, adding that planting trees contributes to climate resilience and helps prevent drought. “We can live in harmony with nature if we plant more trees, as our teachers have taught us.”
The active involvement of Ethiopia’s youth in this national initiative underscores a growing environmental awareness and a shared sense of responsibility for building a greener future.
