This Year’s Election Reflects Strong Public Commitment to Democratic Choice — President Taye

Addis Ababa, June 1, 2026 (FMC) — President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Taye Atske-Selassie, said the 7th General Election reflects the Ethiopian people’s strong commitment and enthusiasm to choose their leaders through the ballot box.

He made the remarks after casting his vote at a polling station, noting that the registration of more than 54 million voters underscores the scale of public participation and confidence in the electoral process.

The President highlighted the participation of multiple political parties and candidates, saying it demonstrates a political environment where trust is being built through competitive elections and the steady strengthening of democratic practices.

He said he cast his vote as an Ethiopian citizen, adding that the act represented support for his country, his community, and himself, and described the experience as meaningful.

He further noted that the current electoral process reflects a system in which governments are formed through the expressed will of the people at the ballot box.

President Taye emphasized that political parties are now directly accountable to voters, adding that this should continue as a sustained democratic practice and serve as a guiding principle for Ethiopia’s political development.
