Addis Ababa, October 27, 2026 (FMC) — The Tigray Region caretaker administration is intensifying efforts to revive commercial activity, stabilize markets and ease supply shortages as it works to restore disrupted public institutions and help residents return to normal life, according to Tewodros Aregay, Head of Economic Affairs and Reconstruction of the caretaker administration.
Tewodros said the administration had been working since its establishment to rebuild damaged social, economic and commercial structures while addressing challenges that continue to affect communities across the region.
He reported that public service institutions and infrastructure networks whose operations had been interrupted had resumed their regular functions. Efforts are also continuing to re-establish government structures disrupted by the illegal TPLF group, with temporary coordinators assigned to maintain public services and support the restoration of administrative functions.
Reviving trade and ensuring the availability of essential goods remain central to the administration’s economic efforts. Working with the business community, it is seeking to stimulate market activity, improve the supply of food and related consumer goods, and address shortages affecting residents.
Tewodros said these efforts were gradually easing supply constraints, with food and other essential products now entering the region. He added that the administration was coordinating with investors, banks and other stakeholders to strengthen consumer supply, reinvigorate commercial activity and stabilize markets.
Alongside the economic measures, public consultation and discussion forums are continuing, allowing residents to raise concerns and communicate their needs. Tewodros said the administration was using issues raised through these forums to guide its responses to community challenges.
The administration is also preparing to extend the resumption of education beyond Mekelle, where teaching and learning have already restarted. According to Tewodros, the necessary preparations are underway to resume the process in other areas of the region.
The ongoing efforts span market stabilization, the restoration of public institutions, the continuity of essential services and the expansion of education, as the caretaker administration seeks to address immediate public needs and re-establish normal social and economic activity across the Tigray Region.
