Addis Ababa, February 18, 2026 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed commended the transformative impact of the Qeto Irrigation Infrastructure Development Project in Kelem Welega Zone of the Oromia Regional State, saying it is setting a new standard for sustainable rural development in Sedi Chanka and Hawa Gelan woredas.
The Prime Minister traveled to Kelem Welega Zone today, arriving in Dembi Dolo town earlier, where he reviewed key regional development initiatives before visiting the irrigation project. On the occasion, PM Abiy and his high-level delegation toured the site.
He observed that the project has been carefully designed to make effective use of the area’s natural landscape, ensuring reliable water access for farming. “The project has been thoughtfully implemented to make effective use of the area’s natural landscape, ensuring reliable water access for farming.”
“It is encouraging to see irrigated land already being cultivated and communities benefiting directly from the initiative,” he added, highlighting the tangible results for local farmers.
In a post published on his social media pages, PM Abiy also noted the importance of the accompanying road infrastructure, which is improving market access and easing daily life for residents.
He emphasized that with the area’s strong agricultural potential — supporting crops such as wheat, rice, banana, papaya, and orange — the project stands as “a clear example of how irrigation and infrastructure can drive sustainable rural development.”
