Addis Ababa, September 11, 2026 (FMC) — United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is in New Delhi to participate in the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit, where he is set to address leaders on global governance and multilateral cooperation.
Guterres has been invited to speak at the summit’s open session on September 13, themed “Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth.”
According to the United Nations, his remarks will address changing economic, demographic and geopolitical realities and the need for multilateral institutions to reflect these shifts.
He is also expected to highlight the role of multipolarity in creating greater balance in global affairs and call for reforms of multilateral institutions, including the UN Security Council and the Bretton Woods institutions.
Guterres is also scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other officials attending the summit.
The 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit will be held in New Delhi on September 12–13 under India’s 2026 chairship theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
