Addis Ababa, April 7, 2026 (FMC) — On the 32nd anniversary of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on the world to learn from past failures and safeguard human life by rejecting hatred, inflammatory rhetoric, and incitement to violence.
Paying tribute to the victims and survivors, Guterres said, “We must learn from past failures & protect the living — by rejecting hatred, inflammatory rhetoric & incitement to violence.”
He stressed that remembrance must go beyond mourning, translating into concrete action to prevent future atrocities. The UN Chief highlighted the ongoing global responsibility to uphold human dignity, promote peace, and confront threats of division and violence wherever they arise.
The #Kwibuka32 commemorations, held worldwide including at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, honor over one million lives lost while recognizing the resilience and renewal of Rwandan society decades after the genocide.
