Addis Ababa, July 16, 2025 (FMC) — The Afar Regional Tourism Bureau has confirmed that volcanic activity has been reported at four separate sites in the region, sparking significant interest—particularly among international tourists.
According to Abdu Ahmed, Director of Tourism Resources Promotion and Market Development at the Bureau, the eruptions began yesterday in an area located within a 15-kilometer radius of the main Arta Ale crater, one of the region’s most geologically active zones.
He emphasized that no injuries or damage have been reported among local residents or tourists, noting that the eruptions are being closely monitored. Despite the potential risks typically associated with volcanic activity, the phenomenon has become a major attraction, drawing in visitors eager to witness the dramatic natural display.
“Tourists currently in the area are observing the eruptions with awe and fascination,” Abdu said, highlighting the rare opportunity to witness such geological events up close.
Geological experts explain that volcanic eruptions occur when subterranean magma pressure builds up or when fractures in the Earth’s crust open new escape routes for molten rock and gases.
The Afar region, known for its rugged landscapes and volcanic features, continues to be a unique destination for scientific research and adventure tourism.
