““We Are Building a Livable, World-Class City Without Leaving Anyone Behind,” Addis Ababa Mayor Says

Addis Ababa, March 25, 2026 (FMC) — Addis Ababa is undergoing a major transformation through extensive urban infrastructure development aimed at building a livable, inclusive, and globally competitive city, Mayor Adanech Abiebie said.

Speaking at the Italy–Ethiopia Infrastructure and Urban Regeneration Forum, the mayor underscored that ongoing projects—ranging from modern buildings and transport systems to riverside developments—are reshaping the capital and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

“We are building a habitable, livable, and world-class city for our people, leaving no one behind,” she said, emphasizing that infrastructure expansion is central to the city’s long-term vision.

Adanech noted that the rapid pace of construction in Addis Ababa reflects Ethiopia’s broader aspirations for prosperity, with the capital serving as a model for urban transformation both nationally and beyond.

She added that the city’s development is driving increased investment, expanding trade, and strengthening institutional partnerships.

The mayor also highlighted the importance of private-sector participation, inviting international investors—particularly Italian companies—to take part in the city’s transformation.

Italy’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Sem Fabrizi, commended the pace of development in Addis Ababa, noting that few cities worldwide match the scale of its ongoing construction. Citing international benchmarks such as the “Crane Index,” he indicated that the capital would rank among the leading cities globally in terms of construction activity.

He further emphasized the longstanding ties between Ethiopia and Italy, expressing confidence that the forum would promote new partnerships, stimulate investment, and reinforce cooperation in infrastructure and urban development.

The forum is organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), represented by Deputy Minister Maria Tripodi, in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Addis Ababa and the Italian Trade Agency (ITA).

This high-level event has brought together Italian and Ethiopian industry leaders, government officials, and key stakeholders to strengthen collaboration on major infrastructure and urban development initiatives.

Senior Ethiopian government representatives are expected to take part, including officials from the Mayor’s Office of Addis Ababa, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure Development.

Approximately 25 Italian companies, along with representatives from key sector associations, are participating, focusing on strategic areas such as transport infrastructure, logistics, urban development, water infrastructure, and energy projects.

The forum will showcase Italy’s expertise in engineering, construction technologies, and urban regeneration, while creating avenues for collaboration with local developers, institutions, and investors.
