WHO Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthening Health Collaboration with Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, August 4, 2025 (FMC) — The World Health Organization (WHO) has reiterated its strong commitment to supporting Ethiopia’s efforts to provide quality, accessible health services across the country.

Owen Kaluwa, WHO Representative to Ethiopia, praised the government’s proactive approach in integrating innovative solutions to advance the country’s progress toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

“Ethiopia is a regional leader in adopting innovations that drive its national health system transformation,” Kaluwa said. “The country is intentionally incorporating new technologies to enhance service quality, patient safety, and healthcare accessibility.”

He highlighted that ongoing programs leverage technology to improve health service delivery and stressed that innovation is vital to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, particularly the target of universal health coverage.

“The WHO remains dedicated to partnering with Ethiopia to harness the opportunities presented by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including artificial intelligence and digital health solutions, to accelerate health sector innovation,” Kaluwa told local newswire service ENA.

He noted that the Organization has collaborated with Ethiopia on multiple initiatives focused on combating antimicrobial resistance and elevating healthcare quality as part of the broader UHC agenda.

“WHO continues to support Ethiopia’s strategies to ensure safe, high-quality, and accessible health services, while expanding innovative approaches to reach underserved communities,” he said.

Kaluwa concluded by emphasizing that strong partnerships and the effective application of innovation are essential for improving health service delivery and achieving universal access to care.
