AU Welcomes UNGA Resolution Strengthening UN–African Union Cooperation

Addis Ababa, September 13, 2025 (FMC) — The African Union has welcomed the unanimous adoption of a United Nations General Assembly resolution that seeks to deepen cooperation between the UN and the AU in areas of peace, security, human rights, and sustainable development.

According to the African Union, the resolution was adopted on 29 August 2025 during the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, and it reaffirms commitments made under Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

In a statement, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf described the resolution as “a strong endorsement of Africa’s leadership and of the vital partnership between the UN and AU in advancing peace, security, and sustainable development.” He added that the two organizations are now tasked with translating this endorsement into “concrete action that delivers for Africa’s people and contributes to global stability.”

The African Union highlighted that the resolution calls for:

  • Enhancing strategic and operational partnerships between the UN and the AU, particularly in conflict resolution, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, and sustaining peace.

  • Strengthening institutional capabilities of the AU Peace and Security Council, and aligning support from UN system entities with AU priorities.

  • Ensuring adequate, predictable, and sustainable funding for peacebuilding efforts across Africa.

  • Emphasizing inclusive approaches—addressing root causes of conflict, integrating political, developmental, and human rights dimensions.

  • Supporting Africa’s developmental goals through Agenda 2063’s second 10-year implementation plan (2024–2033) alongside the 2030 Agenda.

The AU statement further reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to working closely with the United Nations in accelerating progress on both continental and global priorities. It stressed that closer cooperation with the UN is essential not only for advancing stability and prosperity in Africa but also for contributing to global peace and well-being.
