AUC Chairperson calls for renewed efforts to consolidate democracy in Africa

Addis Ababa, September 15, 2025 (FMC) — African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has reaffirmed the central role of democracy, rule of law, and good governance in ensuring peace, stability, and sustainable development across the continent.

In a communiqué issued on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, the Chairperson recalled the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance as the Union’s guiding framework for strengthening democratic institutions and expanding citizen participation.

He urged AU Member States to step up efforts to advance democracy, transparency, and accountable governance, describing them as indispensable for peace, inclusive growth, prosperity, and Africa’s integration.

The Chairperson further reiterated the AU’s unwavering commitment to support its Member States and peoples in realizing their democratic aspirations and consolidating good governance across the continent.
