AUC Chairperson commends Addis Ababa’s transformation as a model diplomatic city
Addis Ababa, May 27, 2025 (FMC) — The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has praised Addis Ababa’s rapid transformation, describing it as a model for other African cities and a capital that reflects its role as the continent’s diplomatic hub.
During a courtesy visit to Mayor Adanech Abiebie today, Mr. Youssouf acknowledged the city’s visible progress and commended its leadership for the ongoing development initiatives.
He cited corridor development as a particularly effective effort to boost conference tourism and urban connectivity.
“I’ve visited several parts of Addis Ababa and was impressed by the pace of transformation, even during weekends,” he remarked. “The improvements are not only remarkable but fitting for a city that hosts the African Union and numerous international institutions.”
He added that the African Union Commission is committed to strengthening collaboration with the City Administration to support Addis Ababa’s continued development and promote exchanges with other African cities.
Mayor Adanech, for her part, congratulated the Chairperson on his recent election and emphasized the city’s ambition to meet international standards as a clean, livable, and modern capital.
She also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure, beautify the city, and raise the quality of life for its residents.
“As the capital of Africa, Addis Ababa carries the responsibility to reflect the continent’s aspirations for unity and progress,” the Mayor noted, expressing readiness to work closely with the AUC.
The meeting reaffirmed both parties’ shared commitment to enhancing Addis Ababa’s status as a diplomatic city and advancing urban development across the continent.
