AUC Chairperson Congratulates Malawi’s President-Elect Peter Mutharika on Landmark Election
Addis Ababa, September 25, 2025 (FMC) — The African Union has congratulated Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika on his victory in Malawi’s 16 September 2025 General Elections.
In a statement issued by the African Union, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, praised the people of Malawi for their enthusiastic, peaceful, and orderly participation throughout the electoral process, describing it as a credible exercise in democracy. He also commended outgoing President Lazarus Chakwera and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) presidential candidate for conceding defeat gracefully, even prior to the official announcement of results by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
The Chairperson extended special appreciation to Hailemariam Dessalegn Boshe, former Prime Minister of Ethiopia, who led the AU-COMESA Joint Election Observation Mission to Malawi, and to Ambassador Ashraf Rashed, Chair of the COMESA Committee of Elders, for their effective leadership in overseeing the election observation.
Highlighting the broader significance of the polls, the Chairperson reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to Agenda 2063, emphasizing the promotion and protection of constitutional democracy and inclusive governance across all African Union member states.
It is known that the 16 September 2025 elections concluded with Peter Mutharika winning the presidency, marking a notable moment in Malawi’s democratic history.
