AUC Chairperson Proposes Three-Point Strategy to Strengthen Conflict Prevention in Africa
Addis Ababa, September 25, 2025 (FMC) — The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, presented a comprehensive strategy to bolster Africa’s peace and security during a briefing to the AU Peace and Security Council on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York.
Youssouf expressed appreciation to Angolan President João Lourenço for convening the high-level meeting on “Re-energizing Conflict Prevention & Resolution in Africa,” noting that the theme reflects the continent’s collective responsibility in maintaining peace.
Highlighting the current security landscape, the AU Chairperson described persistent conflicts, rising inter-state tensions, and a troubling surge in violent extremism across Africa. He also raised concerns over shrinking resources for crisis management and a weakening of international solidarity.
In response to these challenges, Youssouf outlined three key priorities to strengthen Africa’s peace and security framework:
- Anticipation: Strengthening early warning systems through the integration of artificial intelligence and big data analytics.
- Crisis Management: Reforming the African Standby Force, with a focus on enhancing its police and civilian components.
- Structural Prevention: Building member states’ capacities by developing independent national peace infrastructures.
“By modernizing the African Peace and Security Architecture and fostering collective leadership, we can chart a path toward a more peaceful and prosperous Africa,” Youssouf emphasized.
