AUC pushing for unified, competitive & sustainable electricity market across continent

Addis Ababa, June 29, 2025 (FMC) – The African Union Commission (AUC) will host a High-Level Technical Meeting on the African Single Electricity Market (AfSEM) and the Continental Power System Master Plan (CMP) in Addis Ababa on Monday, aiming to accelerate progress toward a unified, competitive, and sustainable electricity market across the continent.

Organized by the AUC’s Department of Infrastructure and Energy, the two-day meeting will bring together representatives from African Union Member States, Regional Economic Communities, regulatory bodies, regional renewable energy centers of excellence, and key development finance institutions such as the World Bank and Afreximbank.

The event marks the official launch of the AfSEM High-Level Technical Oversight Committee, which is tasked with advancing the continent’s energy integration agenda through policy coordination, investment mobilization, and implementation planning.

The meeting will also serve as a platform to brief Member States on progress made so far, while rallying political and institutional support for the continent’s energy transition.

AfSEM is a flagship initiative aligned with the 2019 African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement. It aims to drive sustainable economic growth by establishing an integrated electricity market that ensures African households, industries, and businesses have access to energy that is secure, reliable, affordable, and environmentally sustainable.

The CMP, meanwhile, complements AfSEM by addressing existing energy access gaps and facilitating the equitable distribution of dependable and clean electricity resources. With participation from over 100 African stakeholders, the CMP provides the strategic blueprint for Africa’s Green Vision, including plans for a continent-wide interconnected grid.

Together, AfSEM and the CMP represent a bold step toward ending energy poverty and ensuring inclusive and sustainable energy access across Africa.
