British Boxing Star Anthony Joshua Released From Hospital After Deadly Nigeria Crash
Addis Ababa, January 1, 2026 (FMC) — British heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua has been discharged from a Lagos hospital following a serious car accident in Nigeria that killed two of his close team members, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.
Joshua, a two-time former world heavyweight champion and 2012 Olympic gold medallist, was treated at Lagoon Hospital in Lagos after the crash occurred on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Monday. He sustained minor injuries and was kept under observation before being cleared to recover at home.
The accident claimed the lives of Latif “Latz” Ayodele, Joshua’s trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach, who were both pronounced dead at the scene.
In a statement, Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos state commissioner for information, said Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay their respects ahead of the repatriation of the deceased.
Authorities reported that the vehicle carrying Joshua struck a stationary truck while travelling on the expressway. The collision has renewed concerns over road safety in Nigeria, which recorded more than 5,400 road fatalities in 2024, according to official data.
Promoter Eddie Hearn paid tribute to Ayodele and Ghami, describing them as loyal and energetic members of Joshua’s team whose contributions will be sorely missed.
The crash occurred shortly after Joshua’s December 19 victory over American social media personality Jake Paul in Miami, marking his return to the ring and sparking speculation about future high-profile bouts.
No official comment has yet been released regarding possible investigations or legal actions related to the accident.
