Fana: At a Speed of Life!

By 3:00 pm, over 648 million seedlings planted in Ethiopia’s one-day Green Legacy campaign

Addis Ababa, July 31, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s ambitious one-day campaign to plant 700 million tree seedlings is rapidly approaching completion, with 648.4 million seedlings planted as of 3:00 PM local time, according to the Government Communication Service (GCS).

The nationwide Green Legacy Initiative has seen overwhelming participation, with 27 million people actively engaged in the tree planting efforts across the country. This achievement marks 93 percent of the target reached within just 9 hours of the campaign.

Launched under the theme “Renewal Through Planting,” this massive mobilization forms part of Ethiopia’s broader commitment to plant approximately 8 billion seedlings during the current rainy season to restore degraded lands, enhance biodiversity, and combat climate change.

Millions of Ethiopians from all walks of life, including government officials, community groups, development partners, diplomats, and refugees, have joined forces in this historic environmental drive.

The Green Legacy Initiative, launched by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in 2019, continues to demonstrate Ethiopia’s leadership in large-scale climate action and sustainable development.
