Colombia reopens embassy in Addis Ababa, ushering in a new era of bilateral ties

Addis Ababa, August 27, 2025 (FMC) – Colombia formally reopened its embassy in Addis Ababa today, in a ceremony graced by Vice President Francia Márquez Mina and Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos. The move marks a renewed commitment to deepen bilateral relations and expand diplomatic cooperation between the two nations.

Vice President Márquez, who arrived in Addis Ababa on Monday, August 25, for an official working visit, has held high-level discussions with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, and other senior Ethiopian officials.

Her engagements reflect Colombia’s interest in strengthening partnerships not only with Ethiopia but also with the wider African Union.

Colombia originally established its diplomatic mission in Addis Ababa in 1967, before closing it in 1974.

The reopening of the embassy, against the backdrop of relations that date back to 1949, signals a reinvigoration of historic ties and a new chapter in Ethiopia–Colombia cooperation.
