Courage and Perseverance at the Core of Military Service: SOC Commander
Addis Ababa, January 4, 2026 (FMC) – Military service is fundamentally built on courage, resilience, and perseverance, requiring the ability to withstand both man-made and natural challenges, Lieutenant General Shuma Abdetta, Commander of the Special Operations Command, said.
The remarks were made during the graduation ceremony of basic trainees at the Special Operations Command Training Center, where soldiers who had undergone months of intensive training successfully completed their program.
It was indicated that the graduates have met the basic military and commando recruitment requirements, qualifying them for further specialized and advanced training.
Addressing the ceremony, Lt. Gen. Shuma said the military profession demands a heroic character and unwavering determination, noting that service members who confront adversity with commitment and sacrifice can leave a lasting legacy that endures in the hearts of citizens across generations.
He encouraged the graduates to pursue further training that would enable them to serve in elite units, including the Commando, Airborne, Special Forces, Anti-Terrorism units, and the Republican Guard.
Lt. Gen. Shuma also stated that the leadership and members of the Special Operations Command and the Republican Guard are disciplined and determined forces who have consistently proven their capability in practice whenever Ethiopia has faced difficult circumstances.
For his part, Brigadier General Boja Aga, Commander of the Special Operations Command Training Center, said the graduates have developed strong physical endurance, marksmanship, and a range of combat skills through rigorous day-and-night training. He added that the program also included psychological preparedness and health education.
Brig. Gen. Boja further noted that the training center has significantly expanded its capacity, with improvements made to its training infrastructure to enhance overall training effectiveness.
The graduates, meanwhile, expressed their appreciation to the trainers and commanders for the comprehensive support provided throughout their training, stating that they are fully prepared to undertake the basic commando training ahead, according to a report from Defense Online Media.
