Deputy PM hails transformation of Borena pastoral communities through Fina project
Addis Ababa, September 2, 2025 (FMC) — Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh said Borena Zone in Oromia is opening “a new chapter of hope,” crediting recent water and resource management initiatives with lifting pastoralist communities out of the cycle of drought.
In a message shared Tuesday following his visit to Yabelo, Temesgen highlighted the impact of the Fina Project, which has delivered 14 dams across the zone to address chronic shortages of water and fodder.
He said the project has enabled pastoralists to overcome repeated droughts and secure sustainable livelihoods.
“The Borena Zone, long tested by repeated droughts and scarce rainfall, is now opening a new chapter of hope,” the Deputy Prime Minister wrote, underscoring that the integrated approach of managing water, land, grazing systems, and livelihoods has reshaped local development.
According to Temesgen, communities are now witnessing visible improvements, with livestock returning from fields well-fed, water accessible, fodder abundant, and local development thriving. “Today, Borena’s pastoralists live free from the fear of drought,” he added.
Temesgen’s message followed his trip to Borena Zone on Sunday, where he inaugurated the newly built Yabelo Airport and reviewed ongoing development projects in the area.
