Deputy PM: Modernized Ethiopian Police Must Be a Model of Trust, Courage, and Integrity
Addis Ababa, April 7, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Temesgen Truneh, has emphasized that the Ethiopian Police must provide services that earn the trust of the people and meet their highest expectations.
The remarks came as officials gathered for the opening of the 20th Police Commissioners’ Conference, held under the theme, “Police Unity for Sustainable Peace.” The conference brought together senior police leaders to discuss strategies for strengthening the institution and preparing for upcoming national responsibilities.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy PM Temesgen said, “Our Government, guided by the spirit of Medemer, the conviction that our strength is found in synergy and unity, holds a clear and unwavering belief: that the Ethiopian Police must deliver a service that earns the trust of the people and meets their highest expectations.”
He highlighted the reforms led by Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed, noting that they have transformed the Ethiopian Police into a modern institution. “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed, a bold reform agenda has reshaped the Ethiopian Police Force into a modern institution grounded in professionalism, strengthened by knowledge, empowered by technology, and increasingly positioned as a model not just for our nation, but for others as well,” he said.
Deputy PM Temesgen stressed that the strength of the institution depends on the values guiding its members. “Every police officer must stand anchored in loyalty to the Constitution, to the people, and to their own conscience. They must carry with them the understanding that a sacred trust carries a heavy responsibility. And they must honor that trust at all times, in all places, and under all circumstances,” he said.
He also paid tribute to the sacrifices of the police force in defending the nation. “Our police force has stood united in the face of destructive forces, defending our nation and our people with courage and resolve. That sacrifice is not only remembered, it is honored. And it remains a source of profound national pride,” Deputy PM Temesgen said.
Looking ahead, he called on the police to remain vigilant in safeguarding national progress and the integrity of the upcoming May elections.
“The responsibilities before us are great. Our police force must remain vigilant against those who seek to undermine our progress. It must safeguard the integrity of the upcoming national election in May, ensuring that it is conducted in a manner that is both peaceful and democratic. And it must rise to the occasion as our capital steps onto the global stage to host major international events,” he said.
Deputy PM Temesgen concluded with a call to deepen knowledge, strengthen loyalty, and renew commitment to public service. “Because in the end, the measure of our progress will not be found in words alone but in the trust we build, the peace we secure, and the future we shape together,” he said.
