Deputy PM says Ethiopia’s reforms in security agencies produced a modern, elite federal police

Addis Ababa, December [date], 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s ongoing security sector reforms have reached a new level with the establishment of an elite Commando Police Force endowed with specialized and strategic capabilities, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh said on Sunday.

The Deputy Prime Minister made the remarks while attending the graduation ceremony of the first cohort of Commando Police officers fully trained by the Ethiopian Federal Police Academy using its own institutional capacity and resources.

Temesgen said the creation of the elite force stands as a testament to the far-reaching reforms undertaken within the Ethiopian Federal Police, noting that the institution has undergone comprehensive and sustained transformation into a professional and modern security body.

According to him, the Federal Police has emerged as a steadfast guardian of the constitutional order, possessing strong operational competence, advanced technological capability, and a foundation firmly anchored in public trust and confidence.

He said the newly graduated Commando Police Force has been equipped with unique capabilities that enable it to respond swiftly and decisively to complex and evolving security threats, adding that the unit carries a critical responsibility in preventing and suppressing terrorist activities and serious crimes that threaten national sovereignty and the safety of citizens.

The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that peace and security form the bedrock of all national achievements, paying tribute to police members who have served the country with resolve and dedication, and noting that many have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Temesgen said the latest achievement has further strengthened confidence in the Ethiopian Federal Police’s ability to discharge its historic responsibility of ensuring that the upcoming national elections scheduled for May are conducted in a peaceful, democratic, and credible manner.

He also expressed confidence in the police force’s preparedness to secure major international and continental events, including COP32, as well as public celebrations and national gatherings, in an atmosphere of full peace and security.

Addressing the graduates, Temesgen described them as symbols of the unity and sovereignty of the Ethiopian people and said they have been entrusted with the solemn duty of safeguarding the nation and its constitutional order with loyalty, discipline, and professionalism.
