Deputy PM Temesgen: GERD is a living testament to Ethiopia’s unity, strength, and path to prosperity

Addis Ababa, September 14, 2025 (FMC) — Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh has hailed the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as a living testament to the collective strength, unity, and determination of the Ethiopian people.

Temesgen attended the massive public rally in Addis Ababa this morning alongside President Taye Atske-Selassie, Mayor Adanech Abiebie, and other senior government officials.

Tens of thousands of residents gathered to celebrate the historic inauguration of the GERD under the slogan “We are strong together.”

In a message shared on his social media page following the event, Temesgen highlighted the dam as a monumental achievement of the Ethiopian people.

The Deputy PM said the GERD demonstrates how the waters of the Abbay River, which previously carried away the country’s soil and resources unchecked, are now harnessed for the benefit of the nation.

He added that the project has ended an era of national loss and regret and paved the way for Ethiopia’s journey toward prosperity.

The deputy prime minister emphasized that the GERD is not merely a source of electricity but also a pillar of light for Ethiopia’s progress, built on the foundations of unity, the wise decisions of national leadership, the perseverance and sacrifices of security forces, and the dedication of project workers.

He further underlined that Ethiopia has overcome numerous challenges through collective effort and solidarity, turning difficulties into opportunities and victories.

According to Temesgen, the completion of GERD also serves as a demonstration to both internal and external skeptics of the nation’s capacity to accomplish monumental goals.

Temesgen concluded by stating that the GERD will remain a symbol of light, prosperity, and dignity for Ethiopia, for Africa, and for all people worldwide who aspire to fair development.

He expressed gratitude to the Ethiopian people for their continued support in safeguarding the nation’s honor and advancing its push for growth.

The GERD was officially inaugurated on September 9, 2025, by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in the presence of African and international leaders, underscoring the project’s national, continental, and global significance.
