GCS Emphasizes National Consultation as Pillar for Peace, Unity, and Democratic Progress

Addis Ababa, January 2, 2026 (FMC) – The Government Communication Service (GCS) has called on all Ethiopians to actively engage in the national dialogue process, stressing that genuine political will and collaborative effort are essential to achieve lasting peace and national unity.

The initiative aims to foster mutual consensus, promote lasting stability, and build a strong nation-state, GCS reminded.

The GCS statement issued today highlighted that Ethiopia continues to face challenges rooted in its historical political culture, which over centuries has been a source of disagreement, conflict, and internal disputes.

It was emphasized that national dialogue is a critical mechanism to address these longstanding issues and reconcile differences surrounding key national matters and agendas.

According to the GCS, the government is committed to establishing a positive culture of peace and cultivating a civilized political environment in which problems are resolved through dialogue and the exchange of ideas. The ongoing implementation of the national consultation process is being pursued with determination to achieve these objectives.

The service described the all-inclusive dialogue as a unique opportunity for resolving differences peacefully. Participation is open to all parties without discrimination, and Ethiopians are encouraged to take full advantage of this process.

The consultation is expected to build national consensus on fundamental issues, strengthen democratic institutions, foster mutual trust, and promote unity across the country, the statement noted.

The GCS noted that historical experience has shown that war and revolution do not provide lasting solutions, as victories achieved through conflict are temporary and often lead to resentment. For centuries, Ethiopians have resolved disputes through dialogue and consultation, though this tradition has gradually eroded due to backward political practices.

The service also pointed to international examples, noting that many countries have successfully relied on national consultations to overcome deep divisions and conflicts. Drawing on Ethiopia’s rich heritage of dialogue across regions, the GCS emphasized that the country has the capacity to follow a similar path.

To achieve enduring solutions, the GCS stressed that all Ethiopians must sincerely embrace dialogue and contribute to common solutions with genuine political will. The current national consultation presents a timely opportunity to break the cycle of conflict, resolve disputes peacefully, uphold the rule of law, and build a country that belongs to all citizens.

The service concluded by urging all parties to actively participate in the consultation process as a key step toward lasting peace, national unity, and the strengthening of democratic governance.
