Diplomats and foreign investors applaud Ethiopia’s strong climate action commitment

Addis Ababa, July 31, 2025 (FMC) — The Ethiopian government’s nationwide tree planting campaign to protect the environment and build a sustainable future has received high praise from diplomats and foreign investors based in Ethiopia.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially launched the one-day campaign to plant 700 million seedlings this morning at Abajifar Palace in Jimma. Millions of Ethiopians across the country joined the initiative, making it the largest single-day tree planting event worldwide. The Prime Minister emphasized that this campaign is part of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative, which aims to plant approximately eight billion trees this year, with over eight billion seedlings already prepared.

Participants from the diplomatic and investor communities welcomed Ethiopia’s commitment to combating climate change and fostering a better future.

Wim Vanhelleputte, CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia, said, “It is our common responsibility that all companies, hand in hand with the government, work together to ensure these initiatives continue, so that nature and humanity can coexist.”

Noting that this initiative is a collective effort, Vanhelleputte stressed the importance of supporting Ethiopia’s ongoing work in this area. “We encourage the government, private companies, and international organizations to put their weight behind these initiatives because they are long-lasting—not only for us today but for future generations.”

He added, “Plant a tree. It will be there for your children and grandchildren. They will appreciate the effort you make today because it is in humanity’s interest that we all get involved and start planting trees.”

Minister Counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Addis Ababa, Liu Xiaoguang, stated, “We are very happy to be part of the Green Legacy Initiative. This is a joint effort by the international community to combat climate change and create a better future for coming generations.”

He highlighted the close cooperation between Ethiopia and China, noting, “We have been transferring technologies and carbon emission control measures, and we will continue to introduce the most advanced and cutting-edge technologies here in Ethiopia.”

Mahdi Zemmouchi, General Manager of the Ethiopian Steel Production and Building Company, commended Ethiopia’s dedication to combating climate change and expressed his joy at participating in today’s planting program, as reported by ENA. “I enjoyed it, and it gives me renewed hope. I am more motivated to plant trees and think about our environment because Ethiopia is taking this seriously.”

He added, “This gives a positive image of Ethiopia and invites investors to come here.”

According to the Government Communication Service (GCS), by 3:00 PM, over 648.4 million seedlings had been planted across Ethiopia.

Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative stands as a powerful example of government-led climate action, mobilizing millions to restore degraded lands and build climate resilience for future generations.
