EEU Agrees with Chinese Firm to Expand Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure

Addis Ababa, December 16, 2025 (FMC) — The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) has agreed to cooperate with China Southern Power Grid Industry Development Group to strengthen energy infrastructure and improve power service delivery in Ethiopia.

Senior executives of EEU, led by Chief Executive Officer Getu Geremew, held discussions with executives of the Chinese company on areas of technical and operational cooperation, according to information released following the meeting.

The two sides agreed to work together on the development of power transmission and distribution lines, smart grid operations, and the use of artificial intelligence for preventive maintenance of power systems.

They also reached an agreement to cooperate on the construction and expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, as well as initiatives aimed at improving customer service delivery.

EEU Chief Communications Officer Anwar Abrar told Fana Digital that the cooperation will focus on adopting innovative and technology-driven approaches to modernize Ethiopia’s power system and enhance the reliability and security of electricity supply.

The agreement forms part of Ethiopia’s broader efforts to upgrade its energy infrastructure and support the country’s transition toward modern and sustainable transport and power solutions.
