Elders Who Visited Tigray in Response to PM Abiy’s Peace Call Hold Talks with Ministry of Peace
Addis Ababa, July 30, 2025 (FMC) — A group of elders who independently traveled to the Tigray Regional State in response to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s recent call for peace held discussions with officials from the Ministry of Peace this week.
The elders said they were inspired by the Prime Minister’s address to Parliament on July 3, in which he called on traditional elders and community leaders to play an active role in promoting peace across the country. Acting on this call, they visited Tigray to engage with local stakeholders and advocate for peaceful dialogue.
During their mission, the elders also met with federal and regional officials, including Minister of Peace Mohammed Idris, to share their observations and further their efforts.
In the discussion, Minister Mohammed praised the initiative of elders from across Ethiopia who have voluntarily mobilized to support peace efforts. He emphasized the importance of such contributions in resolving conflicts through the lens of Ethiopian values and traditions.
The Minister highlighted ongoing efforts by the federal government to sustain peace and security in the Tigray region. He noted that, alongside peacebuilding measures, the government has taken steps to ensure the continuity of economic and social development activities in the region.
Reaffirming the government’s longstanding commitment to peace, Mohammed Idris stated that such initiatives will continue to be strengthened in pursuit of a lasting resolution.
