ET Mineral’s Coal Washing Plant Processes Over 38,000 Tons Since Inauguration
Addis Ababa, May 27, 2025 (FMC) — ET Mineral Development Co. Ltd.’s coal washing plant in Tarcha, Dawro Zone, has processed and sold more than 38,000 tons of coal since its inauguration earlier this year, marking a significant stride in Ethiopia’s efforts to reduce coal imports and bolster local production.
The facility was officially inaugurated on January 24, 2025, by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), who highlighted its dual role in enhancing national coal output and generating employment opportunities for the local community.
According to Gebre-Mariam Setegn, Director General of the Regional Mining and Energy Development Agency, the plant boasts a daily processing capacity of 3,600 tons.
Between its launch and May 10, 2025, it has successfully washed and sold 38,091.55 tons of coal.
The plant currently receives raw coal from four producers in the Dawro Zone. Additionally, suppliers from the Konta Zone have been authorized to contribute, with one already commencing deliveries and others in the pipeline.
Despite the plant’s capability to meet up to 25% of Ethiopia’s coal demand, operations are not yet at full capacity due to limited raw coal supply. Nevertheless, the facility has created both permanent and temporary employment for 195 individuals, contributing to the local economy.
The establishment of this plant aligns with Ethiopia’s broader strategy to achieve energy self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on imported coal.
