Ethio Telecom Expands Nationwide EV Charging Network to Support Ethiopia’s Green Economy — CEO
Addis Ababa, November 28, 2025 (FMC) — Ethio telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamru said the company will scale up the rollout of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the country as part of its contribution to Ethiopia’s green economy and clean-transport transition.
The company on Thursday inaugurated its third super-fast EV charging station in Addis Ababa. The new facility is equipped with 16 high-capacity chargers — each delivering up to 180 KWH — enabling 16 vehicles to charge simultaneously.
Speaking at the inauguration, Frehiwot said the latest expansion reflects Ethio telecom’s sustained role in advancing the nation’s green legacy and strengthening Ethiopia’s emerging electric-mobility ecosystem.
“As our country accelerates its transition toward a green economy and sustainable mobility, Ethio telecom continues to play its leading role by deploying reliable, efficient, and future-ready infrastructure,” she said.
She added that the new station underscores the company’s broader effort to support Ethiopia’s transport transformation through digital solutions and technological innovation.
The facility is powered by an AI-driven system that automatically diagnoses and adapts to vehicle specifications. It is specifically optimized for European EV models, helping close a growing gap in the local charging market.
Ethio telecom previously installed charging stations along the Bole–Megenagna corridor capable of serving up to 32 vehicles at a time. Since opening on February 11, 2025, those stations have provided charging services to more than 165,000 EVs, supplying a total of 4,349,761.54 kilowatt-hours.
According to Frehiwot, the initiative has so far prevented 6,081,447.62 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions — an environmental benefit comparable to planting more than 30,444 trees.
With the new Addis Ababa station, Ethio telecom’s combined EV-charging capacity now reaches 48 vehicles across its three operational sites.
