Ethiopia Advances Toward Technology-Driven Elections as NEBE Unveils Digital Registration System

Addis Ababa, January 5, 2026 (FMC) — The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has launched new digital platforms designed to modernize voter and candidate registration processes ahead of the 2026 General Election, in an effort to strengthen transparency, efficiency, and public trust in the electoral system.

The digital system, which includes both mobile and web-based applications, was formally unveiled at a launch event in Addis Ababa. At the center of this initiative is the comprehensive digital app “Mirchaye,” which reflects NEBE’s broader drive to integrate modern technology into Ethiopia’s election infrastructure.

NEBE officials noted that this development represents a significant milestone in the nation’s electoral history, marking the first time digital technology will be fully embedded in the election process. The platform enables a range of services, including voter and candidate registration as well as overall election management functions.

Speaking at the launch event, Federal Supreme Court President Tewodros Mihret underscored the importance of technology in strengthening transparency and fostering public confidence in electoral outcomes. He highlighted that technology-assisted electoral systems have been successfully implemented in numerous countries and can play a crucial role in ensuring credible and fair elections.

President Tewodros also emphasized the benefits of the new system — including reduced operational costs, time savings, and fewer bureaucratic hurdles — while stressing the need for broad public awareness to ensure effective utilization of the technology.

Ethiopia’s 7th General Election is scheduled for June 1, 2026, during which citizens will elect members of the House of People’s Representatives.

NEBE has already initiated preparatory measures, including the introduction of digital registration systems and the provision of training for political parties to enhance voter engagement.

NEBE Chairperson Melatwork Hailu noted that the new digital registration system will improve operational efficiency, enhance data accuracy, and foster greater inclusivity, while also lowering overall administrative expenses. She highlighted that this initiative is focused on strengthening institutional capacity, ensuring data integrity, and aligning Ethiopia’s electoral processes with international standards.
