Ethiopia-China vocational education cooperation gains momentum with launch of dual-skills program
Addis Ababa, July 8, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia-China vocational education cooperation is gaining strong momentum as Ethiopia advances its strategy to develop a skilled technical workforce.
The launch of the innovative “Chinese + Vocational Skills” training program at Ethiopia’s Federal Technical and Vocational Training Institute (FTVTI) reflects the East African nation’s commitment to integrating international expertise with its own priorities, empowering youth with practical competencies essential for the country’s industrial transformation and sustainable growth.
A delegation of experienced instructors from China’s Xuchang Vocational Technical College, Luohe Medical College, and Luohe Vocational Technical College recently arrived in Addis Ababa to support this initiative. Bringing specialized knowledge in vehicle inspection and maintenance, traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation, food inspection and testing, and mechanical engineering, the team will collaborate closely with FTVTI.
Upon arrival, the Chinese educators began working with FTVTI’s department heads to design curricula that blend China’s dual-qualified teaching standards with Ethiopia’s specific vocational training needs. This approach aims to equip Ethiopian youth with skills aligned to both local industry demands and the expanding presence of Chinese enterprises in the country.
Chinese business representatives are also partnering with FTVTI to develop customized training modules and establish enterprise-based practical training centers. This dual-track system, combining theoretical education with hands-on experience, is designed to cultivate a workforce capable of driving Ethiopia’s industrial development while meeting the talent needs of Chinese-invested projects.
This collaborative model not only addresses critical skills shortages but also fosters knowledge exchange and cultural connectivity between the two countries. It stands as a practical example of the Belt and Road Initiative’s contribution to vocational education and human capital development across Africa.
FTVTI extended sincere gratitude to the participating Chinese institutions and instructors for their dedication and support. The program reinforces Ethiopia’s vision to empower its youth with competitive, industry-relevant skills while strengthening bilateral cooperation for sustainable national progress, it has been learned.
