Ethiopia launches ‘Teninete’ digital health app to improve access to medicines and services

Addis Ababa, November 10, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health has launched a new mobile application, Teninete, designed to improve access to medicines and expand public health information services as part of the country’s ongoing digital health transformation.

The launch took place at the opening of the Digital Health Conference and Exhibition held at the Addis Ababa Science Museum. President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Taye Aske-Selassie, officially inaugurated the conference and announced the rollout of the Teninete app.

In his remarks on the occasion, President Taye highlighted that the government’s efforts to modernize health services are already showing tangible results. “Effective work has been done not only to prevent diseases but also to treat them,” he said, emphasizing that the newly introduced digital tools will enable citizens to receive efficient, equitable, and high-quality health services.

He added that self-developed applications like Teninete, along with related services, will significantly strengthen the national health system.

Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba described the launch as a major step in modernizing Ethiopia’s health sector.

She noted that the app enables citizens to access credible health information, locate medicines, and connect with health services without unnecessary travel. She also emphasized that digital health is vital to achieving universal health coverage and building a strong health system.

The Teninete application is integrated with two key national services:

  • Lebego, a modern ambulance dispatch system, and
  • The 952 toll-free health information and counseling call center

Together, these services are expected to improve emergency response, accelerate care delivery and expand equitable access to health support across the country.

Dr. Mekdes added that the development of Teninete follows direction from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) to make medicines more accessible to communities through digital innovation.

The application was officially launched in Addis Ababa and will be deployed nationwide.

Senior government officials attended the ceremony, including Addis Ababa Mayor Ms. Adanech Abiebie, regional leaders, the Prime Minister’s Office Press Secretary Ms. Billene Seyoum, and other invited guests.

The two-day event is being held under the theme, “Digital Health to Save Lives: Enhancing Access to Medicine Information Services,” and features a dedicated exhibition showcasing local digital health solutions.
