Ethiopia on Track for Record Harvest as 16 Million Hectares Already Reaped

Addis Ababa, January 4, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopia has harvested crops from 16 million hectares out of the 20.9 million hectares planted during the 2017/18 (2025) growing season, the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) reported.

The Ministry told Fana Media Corporation that the total crop produce harvested so far amounts to 393 million quintals, while the nationwide output for the current harvest season is projected to reach 653 million quintals.

Wheat, one of the key crops this season, was planted on 4.4 million hectares, of which 3.3 million hectares were cultivated under cluster farming, the Ministry said. From this area, wheat production is expected to total 176 million quintals, with 88 million quintals already harvested from more than 2 million hectares.

The Ministry highlighted that wheat harvests are expected to improve further due to a relatively low incidence of wheat diseases this season.

Officials also noted that the overall harvest process is progressing smoothly, with farmers receiving support, including timely weather information, to expedite harvesting. The Ministry indicated that harvesting across various regions is expected to be completed by the end of January.
