Ethiopia sees cities as key drivers of national prosperity – Deputy PM

Addis Ababa, November 19, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s urban centers are playing a critical role in driving the nation’s economic growth and modernization, Deputy Prime Minister Temsgen Truneh said at the closing of the 10th Ethiopia Cities Forum in Semera-Logia, Afar Region, today.

Deputy PM Temsgen said the three-day forum highlighted the progress and potential of the country’s cities in fostering industries, innovation, and inclusive development. He emphasized that the Prosperity Government sees cities not only as economic hubs but also as models for broader national development, noting that urban growth is extending benefits to rural communities.

The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the Rural Corridor Initiative, which he said aims to transform smaller towns into thriving urban centers through integrated administration, infrastructure, and urban planning.

He also identified key priorities for urban development, including addressing housing shortages, promoting cleanliness and green development, leveraging cultural and historical assets for sustainable tourism, and equipping young people with skills for meaningful employment.

Deputy PM Temsgen expressed appreciation to all stakeholders who contributed to the forum, particularly the Ministry of Urban Development and Infrastructure, the Afar Regional State, and the people of Semera-Logia.

He said the forum underscores Ethiopia’s commitment to modernizing urbanization as a pathway to national prosperity.
