Ethiopia Set to Observe 18th National Flag Day Today
Addis Ababa, October 13, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia is set to observe the 18th National Flag Day today across the country with various commemorative events, the House of People’s Representatives (HoPR) announced.
This year’s celebration is being held under the national theme “Our Flag: The Harbinger of Ethiopia’s Era of Prosperity, for Our National Unity, Sovereignty, and Renaissance.”
In its statement, the HoPR said the national flag is a vital symbol of sovereignty, political authority, freedom, development, and social cohesion for the Ethiopian people and government. It represents a deep sense of pride and unity, and stands as a manifestation of the freedom and dignity cherished by all Ethiopians.
The House recalled that Ethiopia’s heroic forefathers, through their courage and sacrifice, defeated foreign invaders and handed down the flag as a symbol of liberty—not only for Ethiopians but for all Black people across the world.
On this basis, the National Flag Day has been accorded a place of great national importance and is recognized as a symbol of Ethiopia’s unity, sovereignty, and renewal. The House underscored that preserving the dignity of the flag, safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and strengthening national brotherhood for development are key responsibilities of the present generation.
In line with Flag Proclamation No. 863/2006 (as amended), Article 2, the National Flag Day is celebrated on the first Monday of October every year according to the Ethiopian calendar. This year marks the 18th observance of the day nationwide.
The commemoration is being organized under the leadership of the House of People’s Representatives, reflecting the current national context and the enduring principles symbolized by the flag. It is also accompanied by discussions and public programs that affirm Ethiopia’s great era of prosperity and renewal.
At 10:30 a.m. (4:30 Ethiopian local time), the national flag will be simultaneously hoisted across federal government institutions, regional and city administrations, defense force camps, as well as Ethiopian embassies and missions abroad. An oath-taking ceremony and a series of celebratory events will also take place.
The HoPR noted that this year’s National Flag Day is being observed in a grand and dignified manner, reflecting the country’s unity, pride, and collective commitment to uphold Ethiopia’s sovereignty and advance its continued prosperity and renaissance.
