Ethiopia shaping a modern, tech-driven army fit for contemporary global security realities – Chief of Staff

Addis Ababa, June 22, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia is actively shaping a modern, technologically advanced military force designed to meet the challenges of complex global security realities and safeguard the country’s national interests in the region, Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF), Field Marshal Berhanu Jula, said during the graduation ceremony of senior military officers earlier today.

The FDRE Defense War College held its third regular course graduation in the presence of high-ranking military officials, government representatives, diplomats, and defense attachés from various countries.

Graduates received diplomas and master’s degrees after completing rigorous academic and leadership training, it has been learned.

Field Marshal Berhanu emphasized that Ethiopia’s future army must be capable not only of responding effectively to evolving security threats but also of protecting the country’s legitimate national interests across the Horn of Africa region.

“Our military force must be built to uphold Ethiopia’s sovereignty and regional standing, ensuring that we can defend our national interests with strategic precision and minimal conflict,” he stated.

Highlighting the importance of integrating research, innovation, and advanced technology, the Chief of Staff urged graduates to apply their acquired knowledge and skills to enhance the ENDF’s operational readiness and strategic flexibility.

He underscored the need for an army that can win wars decisively with minimal losses or, ideally, prevent conflict altogether.

“The security environment in the Horn of Africa is complex and dynamic,” Field Marshal Berhanu said. “Our defense strategy must reflect a deep understanding of these realities, allowing us to safeguard our national interests, including our rightful pursuit of access to seaports and regional stability.”

Brigadier General Bulti Tadesse, Commander of the Defense War College, addressed the ceremony, underscoring the role of leadership in navigating contemporary security challenges.

He stressed the importance of scholarly research and strategic thinking in informing defense policies amid ongoing regional instability.

The graduating officers have undergone stringent academic evaluations and discipline assessments, with those awarded master’s degrees having met the standards set by the Ethiopian Defense University Senate.

To date, the War College has graduated 330 military and security leaders across various specialized courses, he revealed.

At the ceremony’s conclusion, Field Marshal Berhanu presented awards to outstanding graduates and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the War College’s capacity.

He encouraged the new officers to contribute not only to military excellence but also to national development initiatives, reflecting the interconnectedness of defense and the country’s broader growth agenda.
