Ethiopia shares livelihood restoration and resilience initiatives at GP2025 in Geneva
Addis Ababa, June 4, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia underscored the importance of livelihood restoration and resilience building as critical components of disaster risk reduction at the Eighth Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GP2025), held in Geneva, Switzerland.
The country showcased its strategies to support displaced populations and strengthen community recovery amid increasing climate and conflict-related challenges.
Ethiopia’s delegation, led by Mr. Nesibu Yasin Seid, Deputy Commissioner of the Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission, participated in the event from June 2 to 6, 2025, the Ethiopian Permanent Mission to the UN and Other International Organizations in Geneva told Fana Media Corporation.
The Global Platform, convened under the theme “Everyday Counts: Act for Resilience Today,” gathered ministers, experts, and stakeholders for Ministerial Roundtables, Multi-stakeholder Plenaries, High-Level Dialogues, and Thematic Sessions focused on advancing global disaster risk reduction efforts.
On the sidelines, Mr. Ibrahim Ousman Farah, Vice President of Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State, served as a panelist in Technical Session 4: Restoring Livelihoods: Solutions for Disaster-Induced Displacement and Resilient Recovery.
During the session, Mr. Farah highlighted Ethiopia’s national initiatives that embed livelihood restoration as a core element of recovery and resilience strategies.
He addressed challenges linked to prolonged displacement due to drought and communal conflicts and emphasized the vital role of multi-stakeholder cooperation—including government bodies, civil society, and the private sector—in helping displaced communities rebuild livelihoods and enhance resilience.
Ethiopia’s participation at GP2025 reaffirmed its commitment to proactive disaster risk management and resilience building on both national and global levels.
