Ethiopia Taps into G20 Summit to Boost Global Ties: Billene Seyoum
Addis Ababa, November 24, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia tapped into the G20 Leaders Summit in Johannesburg to strengthen its global engagement, showcase economic reforms, and highlight its leadership on climate action, Press Secretary for the Prime Minister Billene Seyoum said.
Speaking on the sidelines of the summit, Billene noted that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed actively engaged with world leaders, emphasizing Ethiopia’s economic transformation, sustainability initiatives, and Africa’s strategic role on the global stage.
Invited by host nation South Africa, Ethiopia was among 16 non-G20 countries participating. “Despite not being a G20 member, Ethiopia made a significant impact at this platform, which gathers the world’s largest economies,” she said, underscoring the significance of hosting the summit on African soil.
“Our engagement with the G20 began months ago, with our Foreign Ministry helping shape the summit agenda,” she added.
During the two-day summit, Prime Minister Abiy held bilateral meetings with leaders from France, Germany, Finland, Brazil, the UK, South Korea, and Vietnam, discussing economic growth, trade, climate action, and multilateral cooperation.
“These discussions are vital, as they give Ethiopia the opportunity to engage directly with major economies on issues critical to our development and the continent’s future,” Billene noted.
Substantive dialogues also took place with influential global figures, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres and World Bank President Ajay Banga, allowing the Prime Minister to showcase Ethiopia’s ongoing reforms and commitment to sustainability.
A central focus of the summit was Ethiopia’s leadership in climate action, particularly in anticipation of hosting COP32 in 2027. “Ethiopia has taken monumental steps in climate leadership across the continent,” Billene said, highlighting the global attention drawn by the Prime Minister’s Green Legacy Initiative, which promotes environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
Trade and investment discussions were also prioritized, with Prime Minister Abiy stressing Ethiopia’s efforts to strengthen economic ties with key partners, including the Netherlands, a country with strong horticultural collaborations with Ethiopia. “These conversations are about revitalizing and expanding our trade relationships,” Billene explained.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s proactive engagement at the G20 Summit underscored Ethiopia’s ambitions on the global stage. By tapping into this platform, the country aims to reinforce its commitment to economic growth, environmental sustainability, and ensuring Africa’s voice is heard in international forums.
