Ethiopian AI Institute Launches 2025 Youth Summer Camp to Nurture Global Tech Competitors

Addis Ababa, July 13, 2025 (FMC) — The Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute has launched the 2025 edition of its AI Summer Camp, an ambitious initiative aimed at equipping young Ethiopians with cutting-edge skills in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.

Now in its fourth round, the AI Summer Camp has evolved into a key platform for empowering Ethiopian youth to compete on the global stage and proudly represent the country in the fast-moving world of technology.

Africa is increasingly recognizing the transformative potential of artificial intelligence to tackle development challenges and accelerate economic growth. Despite existing infrastructure and skills gaps, many African countries are formulating strategies to strengthen their AI capabilities and infrastructure.

However, the continent still lags significantly in the global AI race. A recent report by Oxford University shows that only 32 countries—just 16% of the world—currently operate major AI data centers, underscoring the urgency for greater investment and coordination.

In Ethiopia, the Artificial Intelligence Institute stands at the forefront of the nation’s effort to become a serious contender in the AI arena. Through research, innovation, and capacity building, the Institute is driving forward the country’s aspiration to emerge as a global player in artificial intelligence—especially by nurturing the next generation of skilled professionals.

At the opening ceremony, Director General Worku Gachena emphasized that the camp is designed to cultivate young talent, foster innovation, and support Ethiopia’s rise as an emerging AI hub. He also stressed the importance of investing in human capital, noting the transformative role AI will play in shaping the country’s future.

The program, which began in 2022 with just 20 participants, has expanded significantly. This year, 300 students were selected from over 3,000 applicants and will undergo intensive training in various AI disciplines.

The camp curriculum covers a wide array of topics, including foundational AI, programming, the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, computer vision, natural language processing, and machine learning, along with practical, hands-on training.

The Institute reaffirmed its commitment to supporting both students and trainers, with the broader goal of building a generation of innovators who will lead Ethiopia’s AI transformation.

The launch event was attended by parents, development partners, and key stakeholders from across the technology and education sectors.
