Ethiopian Airlines Expands Global Footprint and Domestic Connectivity, Board Chairman Says

Addis Ababa, August 31, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopian Airlines Group is strengthening both its global reputation and domestic flight services as part of its long-term growth strategy, Board Chairman Lieutenant General Yilma Merdasa said on Sunday.

The announcement came as the national carrier inaugurated its new airport project in Yabello, Oromia Regional State, and launched a thrice-weekly passenger service to the facility. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh, senior federal and regional officials, airline executives, and members of the local community.

Lieutenant General Yilma, who also serves as Commander of the Ethiopian Air Force, described the opening of Yabello Airport as a milestone for the airline and the surrounding community. He said the new service will create opportunities for trade, tourism, and investment, contributing to the wider development of the Borena Zone.

He outlined three strategic priorities guiding Ethiopian Airlines’ current growth: training young Ethiopians to build a skilled aviation workforce for Ethiopia, Africa, and beyond; expanding aviation infrastructure; and modernizing and enlarging the airline’s fleet.

Highlighting the significance of the new route, Yilma noted that the thrice-weekly Yabello service broadens the carrier’s domestic network, while plans are underway to construct a new international airport in Bishoftu to further enhance Ethiopia’s global aviation competitiveness.

Ethiopian Airlines CEO Mesfin Tasew said the new flight to Yabello is an essential driver of development, fostering community connections, boosting trade, and encouraging investment. He added that the airline has dedicated more than 30 aircraft to domestic routes, serving cities across the country, while the expansion and construction of passenger terminals remain a top priority.
